Overview

Learning STEM through real data, real problems and real projects

Open Data Exploration Summer Camp 2026 is a nonprofit STEM education program for Vietnamese students aged 14–17. The camp introduces students to NASA open data and international scientific resources through a hands-on, age-appropriate learning journey.

NASA Open Data Data Literacy Design Thinking Project-Based Learning Science Communication

In the context of digital transformation, artificial intelligence and data science, students need early opportunities to work with authentic datasets and meaningful questions. This camp helps students move beyond textbook STEM and experience how data can inform scientific thinking, community issues and innovation.

What will students experience?

Understand what open data is and why it matters for science, technology and innovation.
Explore NASA open resources related to Earth observation, climate, environment and space.
Identify real-world issues in Vietnam from a data-informed perspective.
Develop solution ideas and present them to mentors and guests.
Agenda

Three-day learning journey

Each day is designed as one stage of the project journey: discover open data, deepen ideas, build a prototype concept and pitch a solution.

Day 1Discover

Exploring NASA Open Data

Students get to know the program, form teams, learn about NASA open data and the spirit of NASA Space Apps Challenge.

  • Team formation and onboarding
  • Introduction to NASA open data and NASA Space Apps Challenge
  • Exploring NASA Worldview and sample winning projects
  • Identifying and prioritizing team problems
Day 2Deep Dive

Using Data and Developing Ideas

Teams move from problem framing to ideation, search for relevant datasets, build a data map and receive mentor feedback.

  • Mini lesson: From problem to idea
  • Exploring selected NASA datasets
  • Dataset mapping and interpretation
  • Developing solution concepts
Day 3Pitch

Prototype Concept and Final Presentation

Teams refine their ideas, prepare pitch decks, practice storytelling and present their projects to mentors, guests and organizers.

  • Science storytelling mini lesson
  • Solution refinement and pitch deck preparation
  • Team presentation and feedback
  • Closing session and certificates
